As unlikely as it seems, Edinburgh has not had a gin distillery since Victorian times. All that has changed though with the launch of Pickering’s Gin, Edinburgh’s first gin for 150 years.
Crafted by hand in what was once the dog kennels of the Royal Dick’s small animal hospital (a.k.a the vets attached to Edinburgh Uni’s old veterinary college) using 9 botanicals and a recipe scribbled on a bit of paper in 1947, Pickering’s Gin seems to currently be taking Edinburgh by storm. Picking up plaudits and becoming the ‘Official Gin Supporter’ of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, it is hard to believe it was launched about three months ago.
Edinburgh Editor went on a tour of the Summerhall distillery with Ross from The Luxury Editor – see his interview with the founders here – to take some photos and find out more about this fascinating business. The best part of all of this though has to be that they serve Pickering’s Gin ON TAP in the Summerhall bar – now that can surely only be a good thing!
